These are the 3 Shaded varieties of Rex Rabbit. I decided to not include White, as it is not a variety I have come to work with, and is more complicated, and deserves its own post in the future.
Californian is probably the most common, and most difficult variety in this group. Though it is more common, it is seldom found in the correct color. They often have smut, or they have faint, blue or chocolate points. The Californian variety is easily crossed with Sable, which helps darken the points, and reduces the chance of smut. Californian is one of the sleekest varieties in the Rex world, and a nicely colored Rex, with good body and fur, is a show stopper!
Here at Griffin's Pocket-Sized Patch, we're getting a lovely program of Californians started! We have several litters due, giving us a head start into the Californian world! We're collaborating with breeders in Washington state to get a nice line of our own Californians going! So stay tuned, as we help introduce this beautiful variety into the Oregon rabbit scene!

Sable is the "Goldie Locks" color of the group. Being considered "Siamese" colored, they're striking, being a mahogany brown, with a dark sepia color. They look nothing like any other variety. Sable is a variety compatible with either Californian or Seal. Litters of Sable to Californian have the potential of producing Sables and Californians, while a Sable to Seal mating have Sables and Seals. The variety is gorgeously marked, and shouldn't be over looked by people wanting a challenge, and most certainly are the backbone to a Californian-Sable-Seal program.
We have just began to dip our toes into Sables, getting one doe for Californian program, to help us darken points, without bringing extensive color (smut) into our Californians. We are thrilled to have the basis of a Sable program!
Sable Rex (Our Own)
GENOTYPE: aaB_cchl (c or ch) D_E_W_
Seal is the least common of the three. Seal is commonly confused with Self Chinchilla, which is not genetically a Seal. Genetic Seals are extremely rare, possibly the rarest variety of Rex to obtain. With popularity staying relatively minimal, it is up to devoted breeders to keep the variety in the Rex World. The variety is to be a dark sepia brown, with dark points, and saddle, extending down the flanks.
I have yet to get a Seal Rex to the Griffin's Pocket-Sized Patch Rabbitry, but we are getting one this Spring, allowing us to have the full Shaded Rex Breeding Program!
